This project, part of TransitCenter’s Ridership Initiative, visualizes trends in transit and census data for the top 55 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in the United States by population.
TransitCenter and Azavea collected transit data for this project from the National Transit Database (NTD) from 2006 to 2015, assigning transit agencies to MSAs based on their headquarters' locations. Census data are from the U.S. Census Bureau's 5-year American Community Survey estimates from 2010 to 2015.
Ridership data reflects "unlinked passenger trips" from NTD. Bus ridership includes all bus-specific modal data, including rapid and express/commuter services. Rail ridership includes streetcar, light, heavy, and commuter rail.
Visit the project’s GitHub repository for the application and the repository for the data analysis to learn more, and email ridership@transitcenter.org with any questions or comments.
